Sutton Tools NZ, Kaiapoi Factory Fire

31 January 2022

The Sutton Tools New Zealand drill production plant based in Kaiapoi, 20kms north of Christchurch, experienced a major fire on Sunday morning which has destroyed all production capability at the facility.

Fortunately, there was no loss of life and our primary focus is to support our team who have been impacted.  Counselling support is being provided.

Sutton Tools apologise to all the residents who needed to be evacuated last night and will continue to work with the investigators to establish the cause of the fire.

The Kaiapoi facility accounts for the majority of Sutton group output in standard HSS drills.  Production facilities in Maryborough and Thomastown Melbourne will be increased to full capacity as an immediate response while we assess the long-term impact on our ability to meet expected demand.

According to Peter Sutton, Sutton Tools will endeavour to supply all customers and fulfil orders in a timely and equitable manner.

“Sutton Tools is committed to recovering from this major event and continue to support all the people, staff and customers, who have supported us since the business began in 1917 said Mr Sutton”, (the NZ manufacturing plant has been operating at Kaiapoi for 60 years).

Sutton Tools will issue updated information on a regular basis directly to staff and through the media, our website and social media channels.

The Sutton family wish to thank our loyal and dedicated staff in this difficult time who have provided amazing messages of support in response to this incident.
